Gallifrey One – First 2013 Guests Announced!

Gallifrey One, the longest-running North American Doctor Who convention, has released the first batch of guests for its next iteration, running February 15-17, 2013. There’s no shortage of amazing people announced today, but of course we’re very excited by the first name from today’s announcement!

Philip Hinchcliffe was the producer of Doctor Who from 1974 to 1977, overseeing many classic Tom Baker serials. Known for taking a page from great works of gothic horror, Hinchcliffe’s tenure includes The Brain of Morbius, The Talons of Weng-Chiang and The Deadly Assassin. One of only two surviving Doctor Who producers, this will be Hinchcliffe’s first Gallifrey One appearance, and is the first classic series producer since Barry Letts in 2005 to grace Gally.
Also known a long-serving Blue Peter presenter, Peter Purves played the role of Steven Taylor from 1965 to 1966. Alongside William Hartnell, and occasionally with his panda mascot HiFi, Peter’s character became the new “man of action” after the departure from Doctor Who of Gally 2012’s guest William Russell. This will also be the first time Gallifrey One has welcomed Purves as a guest.
Mark Strickson played the role of Vislor Turlough from 1983 to 1984, alongside Fifth Doctor Peter Davison. The final male companion of the classic series, Turlough began his time as a servant of the Black Guardian, trying to kill The Doctor, before ultimately being redeemed. Also known for discovering Steve Irwin, the “Crocodile Hunter”, this is Strickson’s first appearance at Gallifrey One since 2001.
Lisa Bowerman appeared in the 1989 story Survival but is best known for her work in Big Finish. Playing Bernice Summerfield, a character that’s grown exponentially since her first appearance in the New Adventures, Bowerman has a large and dedicated fan base. As with Mark Strickson, 2001 is the last time Bowerman appeared at Gallifrey One.
Nicholas Pegg is an accomplished actor, but of course Doctor Who fans will know him best as one of the Dalek operators in the new series and through his work with Big Finish. Pegg has also contributed to DVD extras and commentaries, not the least of which is the amazing Cheques, Lies and Videotape extra on the Revenge of the Cybermen DVD release. This will be Pegg’s first Gallifrey One appearance.
Friend of the show Gary Russell is the quintessential Doctor Who renaissance man, having worked on the main show as well as Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, played an integral part in Big Finish, and has authored countless books, both fiction and non-fiction, about our beloved show, and so much more. Russell is a Gallifrey One mainstay.
Also joining Gallifrey One as guests are Big Finish’s Nicholas Briggs and Jason Haigh-Ellery, Doctor Who comics writer Tony Lee, and returning to Gallifrey One for his second appearance, comedian Charlie Ross. More guests will be announced as time goes on, but we at Radio Free Skaro look forward to seeing these fantastic guests tell their stories and reminisce about their time on and experiences with Doctor Who.

Memberships are available from the convention website, and currently cost $70 for the entire weekend of programming. We’ll be there as usual, again opening the convention with a live show, and we hope to see you there too!

With the furore and fascination of Eurovision now over with (oh, the excitement! The whimsy!), the Three Who Rule turn their gaze towards one of the most prolific directors in the new series, Euros Lyn, in this week’s Miniscope. Lyn was credited with directing an astonishing eleven episodes across nine stories, including some stunning work on Tooth and Claw, and some questionable decisions on the David Tennant/RTD finale The End of Time. Also discussed in this week’s podcast is Radio Free Skaro’s upcoming appearance at Westercon 66 in July 2013, and some exciting news on the DVD front in the months to come. All in all, this week’s episode is worth more Euros than money can buy!

The RFS team is scattered hither and yon this week with Steven in Madison, Wisconsin, and Warren scooping up cross-border deals in Seattle, but they still manage to crank out another episode of Radio Free Skaro for your listening delight. This week, Steven and Chris postulate on the news that was, including a discussion on the wonderful Tales of Television Centre documentary that aired on BBC Four this past week, but all of the Three Who Rule are there to commentate over the final three episodes of Inferno, the 1970 Jon Pertwee classic. It’s the end of the world as we know it…

August 2012 North America Doctor Who DVD Releases

August will see two more classic Doctor Who DVDs hit retail channels in North America, on the second Tuesday as has been the norm.

Spearhead From Space: Special Edition finally makes its North American debut on August 14, and it also means fans on this side of the Atlantic will be caught up with the special edition, aka Revisitations, releases. This is the debut story for Jon Pertwee, the Third Doctor, and also the first story recorded and broadcast in colour. It’s also unique as it’s the only Classic Doctor Who story to be recorded entirely on film.

The other release will be Sylvester McCoy’s Season 25 closer, The Greatest Show in the Galaxy.

Update: Extras information has now been made available, however there’s still no mention about the Fleetwood Mac song’s presence on the North American release of Spearhead from Space SE.

Each release is a single disc with an MSRP of $24.98. More details about these releases can be found at TVShowsOnDVD.com. [Updated link.]

Update: Full cover art is available for both titles, click the thumbnail for a higher resolution look at the artwork.

Radio Free Skaro #310 – Lesbian Spank Inferno

Radio Free Skaro #310 – Click here to listen!

It’s a time of endings on this week’s episode of Radio Free Skaro. Not only did the past week see the end of Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill in their roles as the Ponds, at least as far as filming goes, it also saw the end of the Upper Boat studio being the home of Doctor Who. To cap it all off, the Three Who Rule talk all over the first four episodes of Inferno, the last story to (prominently) feature the frankly awesome Liz Shaw. But it’s also a time for new beginnings as the announcement of the Series 7 premiere is discussed. Every week that passes is one week closer to NEW! DOCTOR! WHO!

Video Free Skaro 004

On this episode of Video Free Skaro, not only do we have an interview with noted Doctor Who and Y the Last Man artist Pia Guerra, not only do we have a profile of the Myrka, the most despised villain in all Whodom, but we also have action figures making out. Yep, you read that right.

Radio Free Skaro #309 – Silver Spoonerisms

Radio Free Skaro #309 – Click here to listen!

It might sound like an overstatement, but writer/script editor Dennis Spooner was one of the most important figures in the history of Doctor Who. He essentially created what is now referred to the “pseudo-historical”, introduced comedy into Doctor Who as a more prominent feature, and basically created the many mannerisms of the Second Doctor, the characterization that would go on to influence all subsequent versions of The Doctor. In order to fully pay homage to Spooner, the Three Who Rule are joined by writer Graeme Burk, whose encyclopedic knowledge of Doctor Who and deep insight into Spooner’s work makes this an enjoyable listen. Also discussed are some DVD releases to come in the next few months. Four Canadians blathering about Doctor Who in one podcast: how can you go wrong?
