Radio Free Skaro #347 – Toyfairgate

Radio Free Skaro #347 – Click here to listen!

A shocking amount of news made its way from the wilds of the Internet to the fevered brains and out of the fetid mouths of the Three Who Rule this week, including the infamous “ToyFairGate,” where canny spies noted BBC posters announcing….somewhat sparse plans for the anniversary year of Doctor Who. The din of fan outrage was such that it almost drowned out announcements of new action figures, soundtracks, special edition DVDs and other delicious morsels.

But controversy and action figure portfolios aside, this week also marks an interview with Paul Scoones, Doctor Who historian and author of “The Comic Strip Companion: 1964-1979” which chronicles decades of Doctor Who comic strips. Scoones is also well known for his deep production knowledge, expressed through the medium of subtitles on Doctor Who DVDs. Steven spent the better part of an hour delving deep into Scoones work with him, and now we bring that interview to you.

And remember, in less than three weeks Radio Free Skaro will open Gallifrey One with our live show, “The Ambassadors of Death!” With a guest lineup of Sylvester McCoy, Philip Hinchcliffe, Bernard Horsfall, Neve McIntosh, Richard Hope and Dan Starkey, it’s sure to be ninety minutes of fun, facts and…a return guest appearance from Chip, the Two Minute Time Lord!

Radio Free Skaro: The Ambassadors of Death

The 24 Hours of Gallifrey One is set to take place from February 15-17 at the LAX Marriott Hotel in Los Angeles, California, and once again, Radio Free Skaro is proud to kick off the convention on the main stage at noon on Friday, February 15! As previously announced, the show will be called Radio Free Skaro: The Ambassadors of Death, and we can now announce the guest list! Appearing with us on stage will be:

Sylvester McCoy

The Seventh Doctor himself, Sylvester McCoy, will be the headlining guest! Sylvester was the last Doctor to appear in Doctor Who during its original run, inhabiting the role from 1987-89. He later reprised his role in the 1996 Fox TV movie in which he handed the key to the TARDIS to Paul McGann. Sylvester has recently found fame as Radagast the Brown in the first film of The Hobbit trilogy.

Philip Hinchcliffe

Philip Hinchcliffe took over the producer’s chair from Barry Letts in 1974, and went on to shepherd Doctor Who through its most successful era ever, making Tom Baker a star, achieving record viewing figures, and introducing elements of horror that frightened and enthralled a generation on both sides of the Atlantic. Both Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat cite the Hinchcliffe era as a big influence on how Doctor Who is being made today.

Stephen Thorne

If you’re a fan of classic Doctor Who stories, Stephen Thorne isn’t a face you will recognize, but his voice is unmistakable. Appearing in three stories in the series’ classic run, all behind masks, Stephen still managed to create some of the most iconic characters in Doctor Who history, such as Azal from “The Daemons” and Eldrad in “The Hand of Fear”. His most notable performance, though, was as the renegade Time Lord Omega in “The Three Doctors”.

Neve McIntosh

Initially cast in a dual role as the villainous Silurians Alaya and her sister Restac in “The Hungry Earth” and “Cold Blood”, Neve McIntosh has gone on play a more benevolent Silurian who has helped The Doctor on many occasions. As Madame Vastra, the reclusive Silurian detective from the Victorian era, McIntosh has appeared in “A Good Man Goes To War” and “The Snowmen”, and is slated to appear again in the upcoming Series 7b.

Richard Hope

Like Neve McIntosh, Richard Hope is known in Doctor Who for his Silurian roles, winning hearts and minds as a friendly, if slightly eccentric, doctor named Malokheh in “The Hungry Earth” and “Cold Blood”. Richard has since gone on to play all subsequent male Silurian roles in the series, including appearances in “The Wedding of River Song” and “Dinosaurs on a Spaceship”.

Dan Starkey

Starkey is known to Doctor Who fans for playing multiple Sontarans in five different episodes, as well as two episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures and one of the Doctor Who Adventure Games. He has since won over the internet with his excellently hilarious performance as Strax, the Sontaran nurse who aids Madame Vastra and Jenny in “The Snowmen”.

Two-Minute Time Lord

Chip from Two-minute Time Lord will be our technical director again this year, and he will be performing a live version of his Two-Minute Time Lord podcast onstage, as well. Chip’s presentation during last year’s Radio Free Skaro show, entitled “This Is Gallifrey” was a tremendous success, and we look forward to see what Chip has in store for us this time around!

UPDATE:

Bernard Horsfall 1930-2013

We were originally going to have legendary actor Bernard Horsfall on our show to reminisce about his time and Doctor Who. Sadly, Bernard passed away on January 29, 2013. We at Radio Free Skaro have long been fans of Bernard’s performances, especially his iconic turn as Chancellor Goth in “The Deadly Assassin”, and we were all looking forward to meeting him. Our sincere condolences go out to Bernard’s friends and family.

It all kicks off at 12:00pm on Friday, February 15 in the Main Programming Hall at Gallifrey One. Get there early!

Stay tuned to Radio Free Skaro and radiofreeskaro.com for further details about the show, and visit the Gallifrey One website (www.gallifreyone.com) for updates on the convention itself. See you all there!

With Chris and Steven each recuperating from an infection from the Swarm, it was Warren’s turn to suffer the effects of an infestation of the Nucleus. While Warren wasn’t running on full steam for the news segment, in which news on Gallifrey One was the dominant feature, he does feature in a previously recorded interview with Mike Tucker, the visual effects expert whose work has appeared on both classic and new series Doctor Who. Mike is also a Doctor Who fan and an all around nice guy, which makes this episode of Radio Free Skaro a must listen! Just stay back at least 50 feet from the Three Who Rule when listening…

Gallifrey One 2013 Guest Update

Today saw a major guest announcement for the Gallifrey One convention in February 2013!

Deborah Watling played Victoria Waterfield in 1967 and 1968, during the Patrick Troughton era, first appearing in the acclaimed Evil of the Daleks and departing in Fury from the Deep. She also returned for Dimensions in Time and the Reeltime project Downtime. Watling is making a return appearance to Gallifrey One, last appearing in 2010.
Saul Metzstein is a recent addition to the Doctor Who family, having begun his tenure during Series 7. He has directed Pond Life, Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, A Town Called Mercy, and the recently-transmitted The Snowmen; he has also directed the as-yet-unaired episodes 12 and 14 of Series 7. Additionally, he was the second unit director on the recent and frankly awesome Dredd film adaptation. 2013 will be Metzstein’s first appearance at Gallifrey One.
On a sad note, Carole Ann Ford has had to withdraw from the convention for personal reasons.
Check out the full list of guests on the Gallifrey One website. Stay tuned to Gallifrey One and Radio Free Skaro for future guest announcements!
Memberships have sold out for Gallifrey One; The Three Who Rule will be there to cover the convention, as well as opening the convention with a live podcast on the main stage, and we hope to see you all there!

Radio Free Skaro #345 – Celebrations and Swan Songs

All good things come to an end, and so it must be with the series of interviews Steven conducted at Chicago TARDIS. But we end with none other than Gary Russell, someone who has done so much not only in the world of Doctor Who but also in a myriad of other creative pursuits. From his start as a child actor on the Famous Five to his work as editor of Doctor Who magazine and his years as script editor of the show itself, Russell has seen and done it all.

And of course it wouldn’t be an episode of RFS without a lot of meandering discussion, news, and a palpable excitement for Gallifrey, which is merely a month away. Hooray!

Happy New Year! After battling illness and ennui over the past week and a half, the Three Who Rule are back with a bumper episode to launch 2013, the centrepiece of which is an epic interview with Kevin Jon Davies. Davies was the director and producer of “More Than 30 Years In The TARDIS”, the BBC’s official 30th anniversary celebration for Doctor Who, but his connection to the worlds of Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, and Blake’s 7, made for a fascinating chat. Also, your three hosts run down the Christmas time viewing figures, discuss their importance, and also talk about puppies. Six weeks until Gallifrey One!
