May 2012 North America Doctor Who DVD Releases

Hot off the announcement of two new DVD releases for April, we’ll be getting three more classic Doctor Who DVD releases in North America on May 8.

An underrated gem, in our opinion, 1979′s Nightmare of Eden was one of the more tumultuous productions in Doctor Who’s long history, an aspect of which will no doubt be covered in the extensive extras that were cleared by the BBFC just last week.

Two Sylvester McCoy stories that will form The Ace Box in the UK will be released separately here. The 1987 story Dragonfire, featuring Sophie Aldred’s debut as Ace, and The Happiness Patrol from 1988, featuring one of the more memorable Who villains, The Kandyman, will also hit the shelves.

Each of these single-disc releases will likely have a MSRP of $24.98, but pricing details, artwork, and full details of the DVD extras will be announced at a later date.

April 2012 North America Doctor Who DVD Releases

The April 2012 Doctor Who DVD releases have been announced, and we’ll see one new title and one Revisitations title.

Hitting store shelves on April 10, The Daemons will not have the Return To Devil’s End featurette on it, but that was known a while ago. We will, however, get a new Aldbourne-based documentary along with a tribute to Barry Letts and the usual fare of a commentary, photo gallery, Coming Soon trailer, and more.

Another Pertwee story rounds out the month’s offerings with the Special Edition release of Carnival of Monsters, the great Robert Holmes story that brought us, and our dear listeners, the concept of the Miniscope. Along with the commentary track from the original release, we get a new commentary track along with featurettes on puppetry and CSO, extended/alternate/deleted scenes and of course the content from the initial DVD release of the story.

Update: The full list of extras has now been made available and can be found at TVShowsOnDVD.com. Among the awesome-sounding bonus material is a featurette on colour testing for The Daemons done in 1992 and an early edit of Episode 2 from Carnival of Monsters.

2011 Christmas Special – North American DVD/BD Release

Roughly a month after the UK gets the home video release of the upcoming Christmas special, The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe, folks in North America will be able to buy their own copy on Blu-Ray and DVD.

With a February 14 release date, the special features available on either edition are a special Christmas episode of Doctor Who Confidential – though oddly the one from 2010 – and Doctor Who at the Proms. So yes, it’s the bonus material the UK got last year. At least that’s what initial reports are saying. We’ll see if that changes at all to perhaps include the (last-ever) new Confidential material shot for this year (before the show was cancelled) and/or anything else.

Three Best Of… supplements are said to be included as well.

MSRP will be $14.98 for the DVD and $19.89 for the Blu-Ray.

Sarah Jane Adventures Series 4 North America Release

The lead time for the announcement of the Sarah Jane Adventures Series 4 release in North America is short, but Warner has finally let it be known that December 6 will see the series come out on DVD.

Blu-Ray release news hasn’t yet been announced, so as far as we know it’s up in the air if we’ll get a high definition release of the series, which includes the return of Jo Jones (née Grant) and the appearance of Matt Smith, but hope springs eternal of course.

No extras were announced in the press release, but you can take a look at the press release at TV Shows On DVD. MSRP for the release is $29.98 in the US and, oddly, $37.48 in Canada.

March 2012 North America Doctor Who DVD Releases

March 13, 2012 sees a bumper crop of Doctor Who DVD releases in North America!

Not only do we get the entirety of the next Revisitations set, another title in the form of The Face of Evil is on the slate for a grand total of four stories that month.

The Tomb of the Cybermen gets the Special Edition treatment as do The Three Doctors and The Robots of Death. These stories comprise the third wave of Revisitations titles which will have a UK release date not far in advance of the North American release.

MSRP for each of the Revisitations titles is $34.98 while The Face of Evil has an MSRP of $24.98. Click on the artwork for larger versions.

February 2012 North America Doctor Who DVD Releases

Although Amazon.ca jumped the gun with this release information some weeks back, and although we’ve already covered this on the podcast, it is now confirmed that the February 2012 North American DVD releases will be the William Hartnell story The Sensorites and the special edition of the Peter Davison story The Caves of Androzani.

With a release date of February 14, The Sensorites is a brand new release; however, North America is still catching up with the first Revisitations set as released in the UK, and Caves rounds out that collection. The Revisitations releases are of course now the only releases lagging behind the UK.

UPDATE: The finalized DVD art has been unveiled (click each picture to see larger versions of the covers), and the names of the extras on The Sensorites DVD have also been unveiled. Check out the TVShowsOnDVD entry to see those here.

The Caves of Androzani will be a two-disc release and will retail for $34.98, while the single-disc The Sensorites will carry a $24.98 MSRP.

Doctor Who Series 6 Box Set North American Release

Warner has announced release information for the remaining Doctor Who Series 6 home video sets.

While the first part of Series 6 was released on home video this summer, Part Two, including Let’s Kill Hitler through The Wedding of River Song, will see its home video release on November 8 on both Blu-Ray and DVD. The only extras on the disc are a pair of Monster Files featurettes. MSRP will be $24.98 (DVD) and $29.98 (BD).

However, on November 22, a scant two weeks later, and just in time for Doctor Who’s 48th birthday, people will be able to buy the complete, 6-disc, Series 6 set which includes A Christmas Carol as well as other currently unannounced extras (no doubt including the usual fare such as Confidential Cutdown). MSRP for the complete set will be $79.98 (DVD) and $89.98 (BD).

UPDATE: TV Shows On DVD is now reporting the following extras are confirmed to be on the Series 6 box set:

- Meanwhile in the TARDIS – Seven newly filmed scenes, exclusive to DVD and Blu-ray, telling what happens between the episodes
- Doctor Who Confidential – An inside look at each episode
- Monster Files – Get under the skin and inside the minds of the new Doctor’s most challenging opponents
- Audio Commentary
- Trailers and Trails
- More!

Several other extras, such as in-vision commentaries and the web-exclusive prequels, are rumoured to be on the set, as well, but their presence is unconfirmed at this time. Read the full post!

January 2012 North America Doctor Who DVD Releases

Just as details of the forthcoming DVD box set entitled The UNIT Box coming to light, we now know that the two stories featured in that box set will be coming to North America on January 10, 2012. Both the 1974 Jon Pertwee story Invasion of the Dinosaurs and 1975′s The Android Invasion, starring Tom Baker, will hit the shelves in Region 1 at roughly the same time as they will in the UK, where a release date has yet to be announced.

Invasion of the Dinosaurs will be a two-disc release and will retail for $34.98, while the single-disc The Android Invasion will cost you $24.98. Click the artwork for larger versions.

Doctor Who – UNIT Box DVDs

Doctor Who blog Blogtor Who has noted that being featured in the Coming Soon trailer from the upcoming Colony in Space DVD is The UNIT Box.

The UNIT Box will be a 2-story release featuring the Jon Pertwee story Invasion of the Dinosaurs and the final Tom Baker-era UNIT story The Android Invasion. Details regarding contents or price, and the release date itself, are as yet unknown, though this source states an early 2012 release is most likely; the Colony in Space DVD, on which the Coming Soon trailer appears, is set for a UK release on October 3 and US/Canada release on November 8.

The BBFC classification for the UNIT Box trailer came through in late July, though recently Colony in Space screener copies have made their way to review outlets making the information more widespread.
