| Roughly a month after the UK gets the home video release of the upcoming Christmas special, The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe, folks in North America will be able to buy their own copy on Blu-Ray and DVD.
With a February 14 release date, the special features available on either edition are a special Christmas episode of Doctor Who Confidential – though oddly the one from 2010 – and Doctor Who at the Proms. So yes, it’s the bonus material the UK got last year. At least that’s what initial reports are saying. We’ll see if that changes at all to perhaps include the (last-ever) new Confidential material shot for this year (before the show was cancelled) and/or anything else. Three Best Of… supplements are said to be included as well. MSRP will be $14.98 for the DVD and $19.89 for the Blu-Ray. Check out more details at TV Shows On DVD, and click on the artwork for larger versions. |

| Warner has announced release information for the remaining Doctor Who Series 6 home video sets.
While the first part of Series 6 was released on home video this summer, Part Two, including Let’s Kill Hitler through The Wedding of River Song, will see its home video release on November 8 on both Blu-Ray and DVD. The only extras on the disc are a pair of Monster Files featurettes. MSRP will be $24.98 (DVD) and $29.98 (BD). However, on November 22, a scant two weeks later, and just in time for Doctor Who’s 48th birthday, people will be able to buy the complete, 6-disc, Series 6 set which includes A Christmas Carol as well as other currently unannounced extras (no doubt including the usual fare such as Confidential Cutdown). MSRP for the complete set will be $79.98 (DVD) and $89.98 (BD). UPDATE: TV Shows On DVD is now reporting the following extras are confirmed to be on the Series 6 box set: - Meanwhile in the TARDIS – Seven newly filmed scenes, exclusive to DVD and Blu-ray, telling what happens between the episodes Several other extras, such as in-vision commentaries and the web-exclusive prequels, are rumoured to be on the set, as well, but their presence is unconfirmed at this time. A week after Radio Free Skaro’s thorough examination of Doctor Who’s long and storied history in Canada, the Three Who Rule take a hard left turn into the realm of Norman Kay, composer of three stories from Doctor Who’s embryonic years, as his work was the subject of talk in this week’s Miniscope. To help in the discussion (or basically lead), Radio Free Skaro’s own GetGlue guru Emily Kausilik, a noted music expert in her own right, was brought in to offer her expertise on not only Kay’s music, but how music in general was composed and used in 1960s Doctor Who. And, hey, it’s not often that you get to hear a discussion on 1960s Doctor Who music, is it? |

The Pandorica Opens was the focus of most of this episode of Radio Free Skaro, thanks to a light news week. Good thing, too, as Pandorica was another triumph from Series 5, featuring many power mad conspirators – Daleks, Sontarans, Cybermen – gathering together to fight their greatest enemy, The Doctor. Such a visual feast put the Three Who Rule in danger of becoming transfixed on what they were watching, but they managed to mostly steer clear of the silence for the time being. Ah, yes. The Silence. More on that next week… |

| North American Doctor Who fans won’t have to wait long to see the 2010 Christmas Special on DVD, as today it was announced by BBC America that Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol will be arriving on DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday, February 15 in North America. Usually these one-off releases contain very little in the way of extras (which are saved for the box set that comes out in November of each year), but this release will contain the 60-minute version of Doctor Who at the Proms. This matches the same DVD/Blu-ray that will come out for the Christmas special in the UK on January 24. |
November 9 has now been confirmed as the North American release date for the Series 5 box set on DVD and Blu-Ray, and DVD box art has now been made available (previously only Blu-Ray art was available). Along with the “Meanwhile, in the TARDIS…” content mentioned previously, the feature list confirms story commentaries. While the past few series have featured both DVD- and internet-based commentary releases, the powers that be chose to not release internet-based commentaries for Series 5, so including them on the DVDs will make a lot of fans clamouring for such content very happy.

Today the LA Times is reporting the DVD/Blu-Ray release of Series 5 of Doctor Who will hit store shelves November 9th. Given the source, this should represent the North American release date and may or may not coincide with the UK release date. As yet neither BBC Worldwide nor Warner (which distributes Who DVDs/Blu-Rays in North America) has confirmed the release date but that is expected to happen soon.
The cool bit of news is there will be a bonus called “Meanwhile, in the TARDIS…” comprised of two specially-filmed segments to bridge some story gaps. What a delightfully interesting concept to say the least!
Edit: Reports are now coming in the UK release date will be November 8.
