rfs400From its origins on a humble Skype connection in 2006 to the quasi-shabby status it endures today, Radio Free Skaro has tried to entertain, inform and educate its listeners about the wonderful world of Doctor Who. And in this, its 400th episode, it may have finally succeeded. Joining us for a retrospective roundtable on the Matt Smith era were Chris and Laura Mead of the Oodcast, Luke Harrison of TMDWP, Kyle Anderson of the Doctor Who: The Writer’s Room (and Nerdist fame) and Chip, the Two Minute Time Lord. What did these luminaries, and to a much lesser extent, Steven, Warren, and Chris think of Matt Smith’s run as the Doctor? You’ll just have to listen to find out. You’ll also have to endure some blather about stats beforehand. Vegetables before you get your dessert!

rfs399The Fall of the Eleventh is at last upon us as Matt Smith took his final bow in the 2013 Doctor Who Christmas Special, “The Time of the Doctor”. Crammed with all sorts of the Doctor’s past enemies and a number of other surprises, the episode was topped off with a momentous performance from the outgoing Matt Smith. But what do the Three Who Rule think of this one? Did it pack enough emotional wallop after the spectacle that was the 50th anniversary? Did Matt Smith go out in a blaze of glory like Christopher Eccleston, or did he limp to the finish line like some (well, we) think David Tennant’s Doctor did? Listen and find out. Oh, and Peter Capaldi is the Doctor now. We think this is a good thing, and it will make the wait for Capaldi’s first proper outing as the Twelfth Doctor a very long one indeed…

rfs398Despite the obvious dangers of the Blinovich Limitation Effect, the Three Who Rule came together in Edmonton for a pre-Xmas, pre-”The Time Of The Doctor” powwow. Besides many and various clips, rumours and idle speculatings about the upcoming Christmas special, the big news was the announcement that Rose Tyler herself, Billie Piper, will be a guest at Gallifrey One, mere weeks away! Other morsels of information also teased the jingle-belled minds of the RFS crew, including the tempest in a teacup that was the Missing Believed Wiped event at the BFI on December 21, topped off by a final set of interviews from Chicago TARDIS with volcano enthusiast Tracey Childs (from “The Fires of Pompeii”) and notable Davros impresario Terry Molloy. And if lava and genocidal geniuses doesn’t capture the holiday spirit, what does? Nothing, that’s what.

rfs397As Matt Smith’s time in Doctor Who approaches its end, the BBC is starting to ramp up promotion of Smith’s finale episode, “The Time of the Doctor”, with a new trailer and a series of very intriguing promo pics. These topics and more form some key discussion points for the Three Who Rule this week, but no stats this week in honour of Warren’s birthday celebrations! (Little does he know that there are no stats to discuss this week, anyway). However, the feature items in this week’s episode are two interviews from Chicago TARDIS. Dan Hall drops by again to give an update on the final two Pup Ltd related DVDs coming up in 2014, “The Moonbase” and “The Underwater Menace”, and the lovely Nina Toussaint-White (Mels from “Let’s Kill Hitler”) speaks to Steven in an interview recorded live on stage. rfs391The tsunami of news (or, if you will, newsnami) continues this week, with tales of conventions, extras, tie-ins, and so, so much about An Adventure in Space and Time. All but mere pre-amble to the second part of the John Nathan-Turner miniscope, with special guest Steve O’Brien, who spares nothing in his analysis of the somewhat shaky years comprising the tail-end of JNT’s era as producer of Doctor Who. The Three Who Rule also give their thoughts on the latter half of the JNT era, rounding out a jam-packed episode of Radio Free Skaro sure to pale in comparison to the utter madness that is the final weeks before the 50th anniversary. rfs383As most of you might be aware, Doctor Who is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2013, and the Three Who Rule are also doing their part to mark the occasion by celebrating and analyzing the era of each producer who helmed the show from 1963 through until the Fox TV movie in 1996. First up, the first producer – the original, you might say – Verity Lambert, who set in stone much of what we know and love about Doctor Who with help from her story editors David Whitaker and Dennis Spooner. And joining us for this segment is Doctor Who writer Jonny Morris to provide insight and opinion on the first two years in the programme’s history. We look forward to peeling back the curtain on classic Who for the next several weeks leading up to the 50th anniversary on November 23!

The Doctors Revisited series on BBC America has been a great way to introduce NuWho viewers to the different characterizations of The Doctor as well as giving them a glimpse into the Classic Series; the DVD releases of these episodes conclude on December 3 when the third volume hits store shelves.

Along with the documentaries highlighting each of the Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh Doctors, the set will include the new series episodes Bad Wolf and The Parting of the Ways for Eccleston’s Doctor, The Stolen Earth and Journey’s End for Tennant’s Doctor and lastly The Impossible Astronaut and Day of the Moon for soon-to-be-departed Matt Smith’s Doctor.

A week later, on December 10, folks on this side of the Atlantic can also lay their hands on the upcoming 50th Anniversary Special, The Day of the Doctor. The Blu-Ray version will be an all-encompassing Blu-Ray/DVD/3D Blu-Ray release, making it a pretty cool value if you can actually view it in 3D. Doctor Who Explained, previously referenced on Radio Free Skaro, will be included as a bonus; other extras have yet to be announced, though scuttlebutt says An Adventure in Time and Space may be amongst those final extras.

MSRP for the 3-disc The Doctors Revisited: 9-11 will be $39.98; The Day of the Doctor will have an MSRP of $24.98 for the DVD release and $29.98 for the Blu-Ray release. Check TVShowsOnDVD.com for more details (use this link for The Day of the Doctor details) and click on the artwork for a larger version!

rfs381The Three Who Rule welcome back our very good friend Chip from the Two-minute Time Lord podcast as we all talk over Neil Gaiman’s most recent Doctor Who effort, Nightmare in Silver. Has some time and distance since the story’s initial broadcast allowed our hearts to warm to it more, or was the extremely divisive reaction from fandom warranted and still valid? Will the effort satisfy 80s Hair Band pedants? News of the week, with Chip filling in for a very busy Warren, and which includes talk of what might just be the worst merchandise tie-in ever, rounds out this episode of Radio Free Skaro. Excelsior!
