Radio Free Skaro #567 – The Clock Strikes Twelve

Capaldexit! Yes, the Three Who Rule were sideswiped (as was everyone else) by Peter Capaldi’s surprise announcement that he was leaving the role of The Doctor, and after admonishing the UK press for baseless speculation, the RFS crew engaged in frankly hypocritical predictions of their own. That plus stats, Series Ten news and a 70 minute(!) Miniscope about writer/director Terence Dudley round out this episode! Enjoy!

rfs527After a banner week of…well, a new companion announcement and accompanying short, which counts for a lot in this, The Year of No Doctor Who, we’re back to an absolutely desolate news list-ette with barely anything of consequence beyond an art show about Target Books. Which is admittedly pretty cool! And we’ve also put the Series 9 commentaries on the back burner, but only temporarily, because this week we have an interview with Peter Harness, writer of “The Zygon Invasion” and “The Zygon Inversion”, and all around classy fella to boot! Listen and learn (about Zygons)!

rfs512The Doctor Who world was rocked this week by the news that Steven Moffat will be stepping down as showrunner, to be replaced by Chris Chibnall, showrunner of Broadchurch and writer of Torchwood, Life on Mars and yes, Doctor Who fame. What did the Three Who Rule think of this seismic shift, not to mention the fact that there won’t be any new Who until Christmas of this year? More to the point, what are their views on digitizing Doctor Who pinball? Never let it be said we don’t focus on the important issues here at RFS. Just in case baseless speculation isn’t your thing, we also have an interview with Katy Manning, recorded at LI Who and presented here for your listening pleasure.

rfs479Like a bolt from the blue came the first set of Gallifrey One guest announcements, including one Peter Davison, the Fifth Doctor but the first in our hearts (for this year, at any rate.) But lo, across the pond there was news of the Doctor Who Festival, to be held the same weekend in November as Long Island Who! Confused? The news is just the beginning of your confoundining (not a word) as the RFS crew and Nancy Alegria of The Happiness Patrol go into the woods for their “In the Forest of the Night” commentary!

rfs474As Steven dips further into cricket insanity, a factor leading to his inevitable emigration to India could be the fact that Doctor Who will soon start broadcasting there for the first time. How can he possibly resist? Or perhaps a trip to New York to see the Symphonic Spectacular in October? One thing we can all agree on is that you should all journey between the pages of You and Who: Contact Has Been Made Volume Two, which contains writing from both Steven and Warren! And, and AND! As if the previous nonsense wasn’t enough, we have not only an interview with “Kill the Moon” writer Peter Harness, but also a commentary for that self same episode, featuring Phil Cannon of the Who’s He? Podcast! The mind boggles!

Coming to Gallifrey One – Radio Free Skaro: Behind The Magic

rfsgallifreyone2015title
The 26 Seasons of Gallifrey One is set to take place from February 13-15 at the LAX Marriott Hotel in Los Angeles, California, and for the fourth year in a row, Radio Free Skaro is proud to kick off the convention on the main stage at 10:30am on Friday, February 13! The show will be called RADIO FREE SKARO: BEHIND THE MAGIC, and will feature a host of behind the scenes guests who have been responsible for making Doctor Who over the years! Appearing with us on stage will be:

Series 8 Panel, Featuring Rachel Talalay, Jamie Mathieson, and Peter Harness

Rachel Talalay (director of “Dark Water” and “Death in Heaven”), Jamie Mathieson (writer of “Mummy on the Orient Express” and “Flatline”), and Peter Harness (writer of “Kill The Moon”) lead off our show with tales and insight on the making of the most recent series of Doctor Who.

Andy Pryor

One of the first people contacted by Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner to work on the new series of Doctor Who back in 2003, Andy Pryor has been involved in the casting of virtually every single actor to appear in Doctor Who for the past 8 series, including the Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Doctors.

Chip Sudderth of Two-Minute Time Lord

Our friend Chip (who is also our technical producer) returns to the stage this year with a presentation of his popular podcast Two-Minute Time Lord! Chip’s previous appearances have been very popular with audiences at the show and listening later on the podcast, and we’re delighted to welcome Chip back to the show.

Danny Hargreaves, Arwel Wyn Jones, and Claire Pritchard

As art director on Doctor Who, Arwel Wyn Jones spends his time making sure the sets and locations look good and believable. Danny Hargreaves, the special effects supervisor on Doctor Who, then comes along and blows it all up. Both aspects of making (and unmaking!) Doctor Who will be covered with these fine gentlemen, and Claire Pritchard will describe what goes into designing the makeup design on Doctor Who!

It all kicks off at 10:30am on Friday, February 13 in the Main Programming Hall at Gallifrey One. Get there early!

Stay tuned to Radio Free Skaro and radiofreeskaro.com for further details about the show, and visit the Gallifrey One website (www.gallifreyone.com) for updates on the convention itself. See you all there!

rfs440The beauty of Doctor Who is that it can be any story, anywhere and anywhen…and yet inexplicably there’s never really been a heist episode. Well, no longer! “Time Heist,” by writer Steve Thompson of “Curse of the Black Spot” and “Journey to the Center of the TARDIS” (ahem) fame. Did this story surpass his previous attempts? The reception by the Three Who Rule is mixed, to say the least. We also have an interview with writer and Peter Harness, the scribe behind “Kill the Moon.” And that’s what you call a podcast with things in it, so listen and enjoy!

Gallifrey One 2015 Guest Update – Jemma Redgrave, Series 8 Writers, and More

g26frontpage
It’s only September, yet even more great guests have been announced for the upcoming Gallifrey One convention in February!

jemmaredgraveA member of the legendary Redgrave family of acting, Jemma Redgrave has played Kate Stewart, the new head of UNIT, in “The Power of Three” and “The Day of the Doctor”, and will appear in the upcoming series finale of Series 8 this autumn. This will be Jemma’s first appearance at Gallifrey One.
jamiemathiesonJamie Mathieson has made a career out of writing for science fiction TV series in the UK, penning episodes of Being Human and Dirk Gently, as well as writing the 2009 film “Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel”. Jamie has also written episodes 8 and 9 of this current series of Doctor Who.
peterharnessPeter Harness is new to writing Doctor Who with his Series 8 episode “Kill The Moon”, but he is by no means new to the show itself. A long time Doctor Who fan, Peter has also written for such notable TV programmes as Wallander. This will be Peter’s first Gallifrey One.
nickrobattoNick Robatto was props maker on Doctor Who on over 40 episodes from 2006-2011, and will bring his knowledge and experience of making the many props that the show requires to Gallifrey One. He joins previously announced crafts guests Mike Tucker and Danny Hargreaves.
nickbriggsNicholas Briggs has been a Gallifrey One veteran but is making his first appearance at the convention since 2013. The voice of the Daleks and the Cybermen, as well as the executive producer of Big Finish audioplays, Nick has always been a fan favourite at any convention he’s attended.
davidgoodersonDavid Gooderson had the unenviable task of filling Michael Wisher’s shoes (and Wisher’s face mask – literally!) in playing the role of Davros in 1979’s “Destiny of the Daleks”. However, we all (well, some of us) think that that story is an underrated gem, and Gooderson’s portrayal is key to that opinion. This will be David’s first appearance at Gallifrey One.
Also announced were actor W. Morgan Sheppard, Keith Barnfather of Reeltime Productions (makers of several unofficial Doctor Who videos from the 1990s), Chase Masterson, and Arnold T. Blumberg. Check out the full list of guests on the Gallifrey One website. Stay tuned to Gallifrey One and Radio Free Skaro for future guest announcements!
