• Radio Free Skaro #311 – Lenny Bruce Is Not Afraid

The RFS team is scattered hither and yon this week with Steven in Madison, Wisconsin, and Warren scooping up cross-border deals in Seattle, but they still manage to crank out another episode of Radio Free Skaro for your listening delight. This week, Steven and Chris postulate on the news that ...

  • Radio Free Skaro #310 – Lesbian Spank Inferno

It's a time of endings on this week's episode of Radio Free Skaro. Not only did the past week see the end of Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill in their roles as the Ponds, at least as far as filming goes, it also saw the end of the Upper Boat ...

  • Radio Free Skaro #309 – Silver Spoonerisms

It might sound like an overstatement, but writer/script editor Dennis Spooner was one of the most important figures in the history of Doctor Who. He essentially created what is now referred to the "pseudo-historical", introduced comedy into Doctor Who as a more prominent feature, and basically created the many mannerisms ...

  • Radio Free Skaro #308 – Next Stop: Aberdeen

As a result of one of the lightest news weeks in recent memory in the worlds of Doctor Who, the Three Who Rule were allowed to devote their full attention to a commentary on Elisabeth Sladen's (first) finale in the classic series, namely 1976's "The Hand of Fear". Quarries, nuclear ...

  • Radio Free Skaro #307 – Here’s To The Future

One of the more maligned contributors to the world of Doctor Who over the years has been musician Keff McCulloch. Responsible for the final variation of the Doctor Who theme for the classic series, "Deaf Keff" (as some have dubbed him) also provided incidental music for half of the stories ...

  • Radio Free Skaro #306 – XYP-A-Dee-Doo-Dah

With only slightly more news than the most unnewsiest Radio Free Skaro ever, the Three Who Rule pretty much get right to this week's commentary, blathering all over the (somewhat) unfairly maligned Nightmare of Eden. In a story that tackles some pretty dark and adult subjects like drug abuse, and ...

  • Radio Free Skaro #305 – Richard Clark’s New New York’s Rockin’ Eve

On the same weekend that The Doctor's Wife, along with The Girl Who Waited and A Good Man Goes To War, was nominated for a Hugo Award, it was fitting that we discuss the assorted works of that episode's director, Richard Clark, in the Miniscope. The Three Who Rule also ...

  • Radio Free Skaro #304 – Flay Otters

The Three Who Rule enjoy another slow news week with excess meanderings, needlessly extending the length of this week's instalment... however a slow news week coupled with a Classic Series commentary is a good thing. The lads turn their gaze to talking over the *cough* David Agnew *cough* masterpiece City ...

  • Radio Free Skaro #303 – The Writer’s Tales

After a couple of quiet weeks on the news front, we were treated to a bumper crop of topics worthy of discussion on this episode of Radio Free Skaro. Not only were we introduced to the next companion in the form of Jenna-Louise Coleman, but the official Doctor Who Convention ...

  • Radio Free Skaro #302 – Eat Your Soup

The Three Who Rule are slightly in tatters this week with Warren away in the Deep South and Chris fighting a cold that would easily fell the entire population of a space ark that left Earth in the 57th Segment of Time, Monoids included! Fortunately, all is quiet on the ...

From the bus to the cinema to conventions to the web, all the bases are covered as the BBC prepares to launch the new series of Doctor Who. Thankfully the banter gets broken up by the usual raft of fictitious awards and fictitious polls otherwise we could go on and on about global distribution of Doctor Who… and really, who needs that?

A post-Gally funk has set in for the Three Who Rule, but they soldiered on regardless, bringing you the news of the week and the irreverence you know and tolerate. Not that there was much news of course, but this week is only a precursor to the inevitable flood of pre-Fnarg promotion and pimpery sure to come, not to mention the premiere of an entirely new era of Doctor Who in mere weeks. Soon, my pretties, soon.

Radio Free Skaro has stumbled upon an official BBC release promoting the upcoming Series 1 (aka Series Fnarg) of Matt Smith’s tenure as The Doctor. Not only does the release state that the first episode, The Eleventh Hour, will be 60 minutes long, but it gives a few tantalizing details of the series to come. From the release:

A new era of Doctor Who begins in Spring 2010. This latest series of the BBC’s flagship drama programme sees Matt Smith’s debut as the new, Eleventh incarnation of the famous Time Lord alongside a new travelling companion, the enigmatic Amy Pond (Karen Gillan).

Together they explore 16th century Venice, France during the 1890s and the United Kingdom in the far future, now an entire nation floating in space.

As always, wherever the Doctor goes, his oldest enemies are never far behind – the Daleks are hatching a new master plan from the heart of war-torn London in the 1940s. But they are not the only strange creatures the Doctor and Amy must face – there are also alien vampires. humanoid reptiles, old enemies such as the Weeping Angels, a Star Whale, and a silent menace that follows Amy and the Doctor around wherever they go…

Very exciting stuff! Interesting to note that the series is also billed as “Series 5″ in the release – how confusing! As always, stay tuned to www.radiofreeskaro.com for all your Doctor Who news leading up to Matt Smith’s debut as the Doctor in the spring.

rfs177The retrospectives continue on Radio Free Skaro with The Three Who Rule again joined by TachyonTV’s Neil Perryman… though this week the world got flipped, turned upside down as the unthinkable happened: An episode dedicated to praising the work of Russell T Davies! rfs176One mini-break in the wilderness is over for Doctor Who and it’s time to look at the gap year that was as we head into the next wilderness mini-break, awaiting Matt Smith’s first series. To aid in the retrospective the Three Who Rule dragged Tachyon TV’s own Neil Perryman kicking and screaming into the (virtual) recording booth, Vinvocci style. More bile was flung about than a monkey can fling poop, though kudos were given where appropriate… but do we ever want to see a gap year again?

05/10/2009 08:49Previous investigations by the Radio Free Skaro crew into the names of Series 5/1/31 writers yielded a nearly perfect list now confirmed in Doctor Who Magazine Issue 417. While our efforts showed two episodes from the pen of Gareth Roberts, it is now known Roberts is writing but one episode with Men Behaving Badly writer/creator Simon Nye taking the other slot.

In no particular order, here are the Series 5/1/31 writers:

Steven Moffat (6 episodes)
Chris Chibnall (2 episodes)
Mark Gatiss (1 episode)
Toby Whithouse (1 episode)
Gareth Roberts (1 episode)
Simon Nye (1 episode)
Richard Curtis (1 episode)

Here’s an updated summary of the original post we did about the writers and directors who are working on the 2010 series of Doctor Who. We’ve managed to find proof of the involvement of at least two more writers, as well as the possible involvement of acclaimed director Euros Lyn.

Here’s what we can confirm:

Writers:

- Steven Moffat (six episodes)
- Gareth Roberts (two episodes)
- Richard Curtis (one episode)
- Chris Chibnall (two episodes)
- Mark Gatiss (one episode)
- Jack Thorne(Skins) (probably 2011 series)

Directors:

- Adam Smith (Block One and Block Three); IMDB profile
- Andrew Gunn (Block Two – two episodes) Agency profile
- Ashley Way (Block Four – two episodes) IMDB profile
- Jonny Campbell (unknown episodes) IMDB profile

Proof of directors is difficult to find until after they’ve wrapped up their particular block of filming, but we can tell you this :

- Euros Lyn was sighted on set (but not working) during Block Four (warning: link contains spoilers), and the crew is shooting in Trogir, Croatia for a second time (the first trip was back in August) to film scenes for Block Five.

Stay tuned to radiofreeskaro.com, and listen to our weekly podcasts, to keep up to date on future writer and director announcements!

TARDIS InteriorLocation filming for Series 5/1/31 (we’re not about to let that go just yet) continues in Wales, and tonight’s filming gave fans and spoiler hunters a bit of a surprise in the form of the backdrop used for the TARDIS interior. The redesign isn’t extensive but we do get some differences such as the flight of steps. Is it different enough? Is it what we expected given the retro feel of the TARDIS exterior? Let the jib-jabbery about the TARDIS set and interior begin!
